About Me

I am a student, teacher, and technology enthusiast. At the age 13, I rebuilt and replaced the screen of a broken iPhone 4 I had purchased. Now, my life has been built upon this love of technology. I am studying Computer Engineering at the University of Utah, and I work for Microsoft. Every day I help people understand what technology can do for them and make sure it’s running the best it can.

I strive to learn. Therefore, I have a strong understanding of Microsoft productivity applications and services. I help businesses set up and manage Exchange accounts and realize the power of communication through Microsoft Teams. I am a Microsoft Innovative Educator (MIE) and have the skills necessary to teach educators Microsoft apps and services.

But I don’t want to stop here… I want to build the products, tools, and services people use every day, and I have already started. I have a strong background in both object-oriented and scripting-based programming languages. I know C++, C#, Java, Swift, HTML, CSS, and JavaScript. Using these skills, I have built websites for non-profit organizations, taught at-risk youth programming and developed my own android app with 150+ downloads.

I love making things.

Exploring new concepts and ideas is something that I will always pursue. I love making things for other people to use and to make my life easier. Here are a few finished and unfinished things that I have made!

Bike Counter Competition -Winner

The goal was to build affordable hardware that can accurately count and classify objects for city planning. As a team, we developed a system to detect, upload, classify, store, and access data based on an image sent from a physical device created by our team of three. We used AWS, Git, Python, C, and other tools to develop our device. Development ongoing with grant money received from winning the competition. To Learn more visit ReflectR (reflectrservices.com).

Smart Mirror.

I wanted to create something that is both personal and functional. I also wanted it to stay hidden except when used. I decided to build a Magic Mirror because it would teach me both Node.js and functional hardware skills. The mirror is currently used every day and lives in my basement. Backslash Development.

In an effort to understand web development and hosting my cousin and I developed Backslash.dev The website is not built on any template and was completely hand-coded by us. The site is also hosted an Azure…. Overkill, but because of this we have great understanding of Azure web hosting and SSL certificates. You can visit the website at https://backslash.dev/. Backslash dev is the name that we publish are apps under and you can even contact me at Alex@backslash.dev !

Circuitry.

Built as a project for my Circuit Design class this Video shows how I made an LED fade from red to blue depending on the temperature of the room around me. This circuit allows two set points (Hot and Cold) and is completely analog.

I Love New Things.

When there is an opportunity to try something new, I will always take it. I believe that I will never be able to find my passion unless I go out and explore. My favorite thing to do is to travel. I love traveling. There is something amazing about seeing other people and what they have done. I love to see the innovation and the ways that different cultures solve problems.

Places I have been.

I have had the opportunity to travel to so many amazing and beautiful places. My favorite include: London and Paris, New York, Los Pozos Mexico, and Washington DC. I love to see the architecture and love how each city has its own feeling for example: Los Pozos was calm and happy, while New York is vibrant and busy.

What I have done.

The most wonderful opportunity that comes from traveling is the opportunity to help others. When I went to Los Pozos Mexico I had the opportunity to build a school with the Escalara Foundation. I have never met a happier or kinder group of people. It was truly special. I have also been able to help at Native American reserves in Utah. I have grown to love the power of service and what it does for others and as well me.

Things I have learned.

People are incredible and learning to love everyone for who they are is very important to me. I believe when you go out and try to put yourself in others shoes it gives you a much better picture of who that individual is and why they are the way that they are. Traveling is a oppurtunity I will never pass up.
